I want to write music using a musical keyboard and connecting it to a computer. I’ve been researching, but have come up with few answers. What programs can i use together that will allow me to play a tune on a piano keyboard and the music will pop up on the computer screen?

Make sure you have a decent soundboard in your computer. Get a midi or USB connector, depending on which one your soundcard uses (refer to the instruction manual) and hook that to an electronic keyboard. You will also need a good notation program such as Finale, Sibelius, or any of their spinoffs.

I put a few links below to give you access to the technical specifications and let you see the choices you have out there. Hope this helps.

I’m going to recommend Noteworthy Composer to you. Most notation programs run around $400 - $600 (US), but you can get Noteworthy for under $200. It’s a great deal.

I do the same thing. I have just a regular computer with a regular soundcard. I bought a USB digital audio converter. It’s a little piece of hardware that allows you to connect midi and microphone cables etc into the USB audio converter. This then connects to a usb drive into your computer. I also bought a midi keyboard which is just a small keyboard with just the keys and a few minor buttons and a midi cable to connect it to the USB audio converter.

I then have software to record it through. I use Reason 3.0 but there are countless audio programs you can record to. Reason is good because you can use sound files in the program to play different instruments through your keyboard. And reason comes with so many different instruments.
